Yang Shen

In 2002, Prof. Shen received his Bs. E degree in materials science and engineering from Tsinghua University. He then joined the Ph.D program in Tsinghua University. In 2007, after obtaining a Ph.D degree in materials science and engineering from Tsinghua University, he went to the United States and joined University of California, Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral scholar. In 2009, he moved to Harvard University as a research associate. After 4 years in the United States, he joined the faculty of Tsinghua University in 2011 as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2017.

The primary subjects of his research has been polymer dielectrics and solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium ion batteries. As the only viable energy storage media in dielectric capacitors which can deliver ultrahigh power density, polymer dielectrics are critical for a number of modern electrical systems. His group has succeeded in developing a number of polymer nanocomposites which exhibit high dielectric permittivity, low dielectric loss, high breakdown strength, hence ultrahigh energy density. These are achieved through combinatorial approaches of rational design of composite microstructure, of innovative fabrication techniques of high-quality composite films. The intriguing interfacial polarization mechanism of these highly-complicated composite dielectrics are explored through advanced electronic microscopy combined with phase-field modeling from micro to macroscopic scale. As for solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium ion batteries, our primary interests is on oxides which is the ultimate solution for the safety issues that current lithium ion batteries with highly flammable liquid electrolyte are facing. Oxide electrolyte of perovskite or garnet structures, bulk and thin film, have been prepared. All solid state batteries have been developed through design of novel battery structure and integrated techniques for the fabrication of all solid state battery cells. Professor Shen has published ~ 160 papers, which have been cited over 6600 times, and is holder of 30 patents. His H-index is 40.
